30-Day Gratitude Challenge: Week 2

On the 1st of July, I embarked on a Gratitude Challenge. For 30 days, I am writing down what people, things, and situations I am grateful for, and why. This is how my second week went.

Day 8: Only grateful in the morning?

Much like day 7, I was off to a great start today, with plenty to feel grateful about in the morning. As the day progressed, I kind of forgot to look for things to feel grateful about, much less to even write them down. It’s in the evening, while winding down, when I’m reminded of this challenge and when I copy the items I wrote down in my phone to my journal.

Days 9 and 10: Getting into a groove

Slowly buy surely, this is working. I’m finding things to feel grateful about all day, without needing external reminders. Some of the things I wrote down on these days were:

I’m grateful for this Gratitude Challenge. It trains my discipline and teaches me to focus on positive things.

I thank the roads and my car for the meditative state they bring me in when driving long distances.

I’m grateful for the adventures that await me.

Days 11 to 13: Finding my whys

On these days, I went looking for the whys behind the things I’m gratitude for. By asking myself why I’m grateful for something I write down, I can find recurring themes.

For me, these seem to be comfort, luxury, control, organization, and freedom. What are yours? Let me know in the comments.

Day 14: This hurts…

At the two-week marker, I was hit by lower back pain, which distracted me so much from the challenge that I didn’t write anything down. Day 14 will remain a blank page in my notebook as a reminder that there is no excuse not to be grateful. In hindsight, there were things to be grateful for:

The skill and vision that César Manrique employed to create his half-underground villa on the island of Lanzarote.

This vivid reminder that I should take better care of my body.

How my pool’s buoyancy provided instant relief from my back pain.
